Geology/History
A somewhat rare cyclosilicate mineral first described in 1819 for an occurrence in Greenland. Eudialyte forms Nepheline-syenite rocks, an alkaline igneous rock. It will often form with many associate minerals such as Microcline, Aegerine, Arfvedsonite, Sodalite, Titanite, Magnetite, Lamprophyllite & more.
Its name has derived from the Greek Εὖ διάλυτος - eu dialytos, meaning "well decomposable", an indicator of its solubility in acids, particularly sulfuric acid. Eudialyte uses are limited due to its rarity, it is primarily utilised as a gemstone & minor Zirconium ore.
This mineral has a significant content of Rare Earth elements as well as U, Pb, Nb, Ta, Zr, Hf. Due to this composition, geoscientists are able to use Eudialyte as a geochronometer or index mineral to date & establish the genesis of its host rocks.
