Dumortierite was first described in 1881 for a deposit at Chaponost, in the Alps of France. It was named after the French paleontologist Eugene Dumortier (1803–1873). It typically occurs in boron rich pegmatites & high temperature aluminium rich regional metamorphic rocks.
This aluminium Boro-silicate mineral typically forms fibrous aggregates of slender Prismatic crystals. The crystals vary in colour from green, brown & blue to the less common violet & pink. The colour variations occur through the substitution of Iron & other elements for Aluminium.
Crystals exhibit pleochroism from red to blue to violet. It can also occur within a Quartz compound. The Dumortierite Quartz is blue coloured Quartz that contains inclusions of Dumortierite.For industrial purpose Dumortierite is used in the manufacturing of high grade porcelain.
Known localities of Dumortierite include France, Italy, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Madagascar, Namibia, Nevada, Norway, Poland, Russia & Sri Lanka.
