Chrysoprase, is a green cryptocrystalline variety of Chalcedony that contains small quantities of nickel. Considered the most desirable of the Chalcedony group. Its most desired colour is apple-green, but varies to deep green & lemon yellow. Darker varieties of Chrysoprase are sometimes referred to as Prase. The name Chrysoprase is derived from the Greek χρυσός chrysos, meaning 'gold' & πράσινον prasinon, meaning 'green'. The colour of Chrysoprase can fade in sunlight or when heated & colours may return under moist storage.
Chrysoprase occurs from the deep weathering of nickeliferous serpentinites or other ultramafic ophiolite rocks. In the Australian deposits, Chrysoprase occurs below an iron & silica cap. Commonly as veins & nodules with iron oxides & Goethite in Magnesite rich Saprolite.
There is a very similar mineral to Chrysoprase known as Chrome Chalcedony, in which the colour is created by chromium rather than nickel.
