Chlorite is an iron aluminium manganese silicate hydroxide mineral. The chlorites are a group of phyllosilicate minerals. Chlorites can be described by the following four endmembers based on their chemistry via substitution of the following four elements in the silicate lattice; Mg (Clinochlore), Fe (Chamosite), Ni (Nimite) & Mn (Pennantite). In addition, zinc, lithium & calcium species are known. Clinochlore is the most common mineral of the Chlorite group.
The name chlorite is derived from the Greek chloros, meaning green. This is the most common colour of Chlorite, however it can also occur in pink, yellow, red & white. Chlorite Quartz refers to Quartz with inclusions of Chlorite, either as a coating or internal inclusion. Often found as phantom formations. This occurs when Chlorite is deposited on the surface of Quartz, the Quartz then grows larger creating a green ghost like crystal within.
The Chlorite group minerals exist over a wide range of temperature & pressure conditions. For this reason chlorite minerals are ubiquitous minerals within low & medium temperature metamorphic rocks, deeply buried sediments, hydrothermal rocks & some igneous rocks.
