Geology/History
Also known as Blue holy & Blue Lace Chalcedony. Most Agates occur as nodules in volcanic rocks or ancient lavas where they represent cavities originally produced by the disengagement of volatiles in the molten mass which were then filled, wholly or partially, by siliceous matter deposited in regular layers upon the walls.
Agate has also been known to fill veins or cracks in volcanic or altered rock underlain by granitic intrusive masses. Such Agates, when cut transversely, exhibit a succession of parallel lines, often of extreme tenuity, giving a banded appearance to the section. Such stones are known as banded Agate, rib Agate & striped Agate.
In the case of Blue Lace Agate variations in the composition of the siliceous solution or in the geological conditions of deposition caused a corresponding variation in the successive layers, that results in alternate layers or bands of crystalline quartz & Chalcedony/Agate.
All varieties of Agates have been utilised by humans for centuries with a great variety of purpose, most famously for ornate carvings other uses included bowls, utensils, jewellery, decorative tiles & cameos. At least 3,000 years ago the Egyptians adorned themselves with Agate gemstones.
