Geology/History
A very rare hydrous potassium iron titanium silicate mineral with limited availability. It was first officially discovered in 1854 at Laven Island in Norway. The name Astrophyllite is derived from the ancient Greek, astron meaning “star” & phyllon meaning “leaf”, a reference to its unusual star like formation. It occurs in cavities or fissures within igneous rock such as nepheline syenites & alkali granites, as well as within other plutonic rocks. It usually forms bladed, radiating stellate aggregates & is generally found upon a light coloured felsic matrix.
Astrophyllite can be classed as either an inosilicate, phyllosilicate or an intermediate between both categories of silicates. It is visually identical to kupletskite & the two can form isomorphous specimens. Astrophyllite is also found with associate minerals such as Quartz, Titanite, Aegerine, Riebeckite, Feldspar, Titanite, Acmite, Mica, Zircon Sphene & NephelineThe few known locations of Astrophyllite are Narsarsuk & Kangerdluarsuk, Greenland; Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Quebec, Canada; the Kola Peninsula, Russia; Pikes Peak, Colorado, USA & Brevig, Laven Island Norway.
