Geology/History
The term Tektite derived from the Greek τηκτός tēktós, meaning molten. This unique natural glass forms when molten material of primarily terrestrial origin is forcefully ejected during a meteorite impact, as the debris re-enters the atmosphere it undergoes rapid cooling & then solidifies to form Tektites. Depending on the force of impact this distal ejecta can often be found hundreds or thousands of kilometers away from the impact site. The chemical composition of Tektites varies depending on the impact location yet they are always high in silica (68-82%) & generally contain 10-14% alumina, lesser iron, magnesium, calcium, potassium & titanium.
Although tektites are superficially & visually similar to Obsidians & natural volcanic glasses, they have distinctively different physical characteristics. The main delineation is water content Tektites contain virtually no water. Comparatively volcanic glasses contain high amounts of water. Due to their high water & volatiles content when heated to melting point they exhibit a high foam reaction. When a Tektite is heated to melting point it produces only a few bubbles, this is due to its low water & volatiles content. Basically because of the explosive & super heating process involved in the creation of Tektites the water & other volatiles are cooked out or evaporated from the remaining structure. The silica composition of Tektites is high generally over 65%. However the bulk chemical & isotopic composition is closer to that of shales or certain sedimentary rocks & significantly different to that of terrestrial volcanic glasses. Tektites will often contain particles or bands of Lechatelierite a type of silica glass, which is not found in terrestrial volcanic glasses. The final delineation is partly melted inclusions of shocked or unshocked mineral grains such as Quartz, Zircon, Apatite & Coesite, though these inclusions only occur in a few Tektites.
In consideration of morphology & physical characteristics Tektites are divided into four groups. 1- Splash-form (normal) tektites, 2- Aerodynamically shaped tektites, 3- Muong Nong-type (layered) tektites & 4- Microtektites less than 1 mm in size & typically found in deep-sea sediments. Tektites greatly rang in size & shape from as small as millimeters with barely any weight up to the largest of 15kg found in south east Asia.
