Seraphinite is a particular rare form of Clinochlore & member of the Chlorite group. Named after the biblical seraphs or seraphim angels, the highest order of angels. Seraphinite acquired its name due to its chatoyancy & resemblance to feathers, the visual effect is caused by mica inclusions.
With some specimens the feather resemblance is quite strong, with shorter feather like growths leading into longer feathers creating a wing like appearance. Seraphinite is generally dark green to gray in colour, however a rare gold & black variety has been found.
Seraphinite is mined in eastern Siberia in Russia. It occurs in the Korshunovskoye iron skarn deposit in the Irkutskava Oblast of Eastern Siberia.
