Pyrite is the most common of the sulfide minerals. This mineral's metallic luster & pale brass-yellow hue give it a strong resemblance to gold. This characteristic brought Pyrite its nickname of fool's Gold. The name pyrite is derived from the Greek meaning "of fire" or "in fire".
Pyrite is usually found with other sulfides or oxides in Quartz veins, sedimentary rock, & metamorphic rock, as well as in coal beds & as a replacement mineral in fossils. Pyrite is sometimes found in association with small quantities of gold. Gold & arsenic occur as a coupled substitution in the pyrite structure. Arsenopyrite is toxic & should be handled with care. Pyrite usually forms cuboid crystals, sometimes forming framboids. Under certain circumstances T-shaped crystals form. Pyrite can also form dodecahedral crystals.
