Moldavite is an olive-green or dull greenish vitreous glass substance that is a one kind of Tektite. The name Moldavite derived from the town of Moldauthein now in Bohemia the Czech Republic where it was first located. The current consensus among earth scientists is that moldavites were formed about 14,700,000 years ago during the impact of a giant meteorite. Splatters of material that was melted by the impact cooled while airborne & most fell in Bohemia.
Moldavites have been found in southern Bohemia, western Moravia, the Cheb Basin (northwest Bohemia), Lusatia (Germany) & Waldviertel (Austria). Isotope analysis of Moldavites samples have shown a beryllium-10 isotope composition similar to that of Australasian tektites (Australites) & Ivory Coast tektites (Ivorites). This similarity indicates Moldavites, Australites & Ivorites consist of near surface & loosely consolidated terrestrial matter melted by hypervelocity impacts.
Moldavite has a diagnostic pattern of striae & bubbles, which are elongated & torpedo-shaped unlike man-made glass. It does not contain crystals like those found in volcanic glass or obsidian.
The Holy Grail is said to be carved out of a green stone that fell from Satan's crown as he descended from Heaven to Hell. Legend has long claimed this stone to be an Emerald. The recently been proposed theory is the Holy Grail may have been carved from Moldavite, using the stone falling from Satan's crown as a metaphor for the green stone falling from the sky as a meteor.
