Geology/History
Larimar is a rare blue variety of pectolite found only in the Dominican Republic, in the Caribbean. The Los Chupaderos mine is responsible for most of the worlds Larimar. Alluvial deposits on the beach & in the Bahoruco River are also found. Larimar occurs in vugs & cavities either as pure blue pectolite or as a rock composed largely of blue pectolite. The distinct unique blue results from cobalt substitution for calcium. The colour is photosensitive & fades with time if exposed to too much light or heat. Although known by the locals for quite some time they believed the stone came from the sea & the first mountain mining operations did not start until the 1970’s.
